Itinerary

Svaneti, a historic region in northwestern Georgia, is renowned for its dramatic mountain landscapes and deep valleys. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, it boasts peaks soaring beyond 14,913' and even 24,855'. At 11,980' above sea level, Ushguli is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe. Like nearly every village in the region, it is adorned with medieval towers built between the ninth and twelfth centuries.

  • Day 1

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 1 Arrive in Georgia
    Depart from Italy (flight expenses not included, estimated at € 250).
    Arrive at Kutaisi airport (KUT) and transfer to Mestia, nestled at the foot of Mount Ushba.
    Overnight stay in Mestia.

  • Day 2

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 2 Tetnuldi

    Depending on weather conditions, ascend using the Tetnuldi Ski Resort lifts. From the top station, skin up to reach the upper glaciers. Enjoy an exhilarating descent to Zhabeshi or Adishi villages (approx. 8,948').

  • Day 3

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 3 Guly Pass

    After a hearty breakfast, skin up through the stunning Guly Valley, beneath the towering Mount Ushba, to reach the Guly Pass at 15,181'. A thrilling descent follows, offering sunlit slopes and breathtaking views.

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 4 and 5 Ushguly

    Venture deep into the most remote corners of Svaneti, to the village of Ushguli. Over the next two days, you will conquer peaks around 14,913' on the slopes of Mount Shkhara, which rises to 25,849'.
    You’ll also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Ushguli, a timeless village that feels suspended between past and present. Situated between 10,936' and 11,980' above sea level, it is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe.
    Two nights in a rifugio.


  • Day 5

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 4 and 5 Ushguly

  • Day 6

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 6 Chalaadi Glacier
    After returning to Mestia, embark on an adventure to the Chalaadi Glacier aboard a snowcat, which will take you up to around 11,930'. From there, you will continue on skins to a pass at 15,907'. Once you reach the pass, a stunning descent awaits, carving through a glacier framed by majestic peaks, towering seracs, and deep crevasses.

  • Day 7

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 7: Weather-Dependent Adventure
    The day’s plan depends on weather and snow conditions. The choice is between two beautiful local valleys, both located at 6,959': the first option takes you to the Laila Pass at 15,410', while the second leads to the peak towering above the town of Mazeri, reaching 14,913'.
    Overnight stay in Mestia.


  • Day 8

    BACKCOUNTRY SKI TOURING IN GEORGIA

    Day 8 Transfer to Kutaisi airport

    Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Italy.

Additional information and required material
Equipment: ARVA kit, ice axe, crampons, skis, bindings (with climbing bars), ski boots, and skins (in excellent condition, with strong adhesive!). 40-litre capacity backpack. Waterproof, insulated windproof jacket, heavy fleece, thermal base layers, hat, sunscreen, gloves (2 pairs), sunglasses and goggles, any additional necessary gear, water bottle (thermos).
